When your HP ink cartridges run out of ink, you have two choices: buy a new ink cartridge or refill your existing ink cartridge. Brand-new HP ink cartridges are expensive. You can save more money by refilling your existing HP ink cartridges. Therefore, it is important that you know how to do an HP ink refill in order to save more money. If you don’t want to refill the ink cartridges yourself, you can go to a printer filling station and have a professional do it for you. However, refilling HP ink cartridges is easy and you can do it yourself without any hard work. Continue reading to learn how to refill your HP ink cartridge.

Removing Your HP Ink Cartridge

The first thing you need to do if you want to do an HP ink refill is to remove your ink cartridge from your printer. Make sure that you read your HP printer’s manual if you don’t know how to remove the ink cartridge. Do not force the cartridge out of the printer to avoid damaging the cartridge and/or printer. If the cartridge or printer is damaged, you may have to replace it or get it repaired.

Preparing your HP Ink Cartridge for Refilling

After removing the cartridge, get a paper towel and wipe the heads of cartridge lengthwise. Avoid wiping across the heads and make sure that you remove all the ink. Next, get a piece of tape and put it on the cartridge heads. The tape will prevent the ink from leaking out while you are refilling your HP ink cartridge. Remove the sticker located on the top of the HP ink cartridge to uncover a hole. This hole is where you will insert your ink syringe during the refilling process.

Doing the HP Ink Refill

Now that your empty cartridge is prepared, you can now start refilling it. Get a 12 ml ink syringe and fill it with ink. If you are refilling two different ink cartridges (e.g. a black ink cartridge and a tri color ink cartridge) at the same time, use a separate ink syringe for each cartridge. Buy some HP printer ink from a computer store and fill your ink syringe with ink until you have about 10 ml of ink inside the syringe.

Once you have about 10 ml of ink inside your syringe, insert the needle of the syringe into the ink cartridge’s hole and inject the ink slowly. If you see the ink bubbling out of the hole, then inject the ink more slowly.

Finishing Up the HP Ink Refill

After injecting ink into your HP ink cartridge, cover the hole with the sticker and remove the tape from the cartridge heads. Wipe the cartridge heads with your paper towel and let the ink cartridge sit on your paper towel for about ten minutes until the leaking of the ink slows down. Put your HP ink cartridge back into your printer and boot up your computer. Go to printer properties and click “Clean Cartridges”. Perform a test print to check if your ink cartridge is working properly.
