Is It Now Microsoft Surface Versus Android Tablets?
The tablet wars have started again. Microsoft is challenging the hold of iPad over the other tablet PCs in the market. However, Android based tablets refuse to let go and are also starting to gear up for the competition. We can say that it is the Surface Tablet and the Android tablets will go on a head to head when it comes to getting the market of those planning to sell tablet PC and look for other options.
The competition will now be about which one will be able to do and achieve more. Mobile computing is starting to become a part and parcel of our lives. We now live in a world where we are required to constantly move around and not be stuck in one place for a long time. Also, today we are required to be connected to the rest of the world and that the rest of the world should be able to contact us.
That is why the tablet PC has become such a hit. It is lightweight; we can bring it anywhere and can do basic computing when we need to. However, there are still some things that we need to do, especially when we work, that most Android-based tablet PCs cannot address. This shows the limitations of the Android OS. Even with the most powerful hardware, you can only do so much with your Android tablet because the operating system has limitations.
This limitation is what Microsoft wants to address. Since they have the expertise in both hardware and software development, they used this in order to come up with a new and improved product. They are hoping that the Surface tablet will be able to fill that gap or void. They want people to sell tablet PC when their product finally becomes available. With the announcements that they made when they launched the Surface Tablet, they seemed pretty serious in being able to address that need for a more powerful yet still lightweight tablet PC that could process much like a laptop or net book could.
It is not that Android Tablets will not be able to do more than what it can today. There are Android-based tablets in the market that are considered direct competitors of the iPad in terms of processing power. Take a look at the Asus Transformer Prime. Its processor is already quad core, much like some of the netbooks and laptops that we have. The battery can last long enough for you to finish several tasks including watching a movie or playing a graphics-heavy game. It even has a dock which doubles as an external keyboard and when you bring them together, it indeed looks like a laptop. However, there are still some things that you cannot do like process word documents, or edit movies and pictures. Sure, there are applications that can do it, but they are still limited.
You can just imagine what you can do with the Surface Tablet with the full version of Windows 8 installed. The possibilities are endless. Even though it still remains to be seen until the Surface becomes available, but let’s not close our doors to the possibility that you will sell your tablet PC in exchange for it.

For me, the biggest appeal of the Windows Tablets is the ability to run the same apps I already use on my desktop. I just hope that the Microsoft Surface and other Windows tablets will perform well enough to compete with the iPad and Android tablets. Will they be fast? How long will the battery last? The possibilities are endless, but like you suggest, we have yet to see the actual devices…
